A Little History:
The Devaux House has been part of Champagne’s legendary history since the 19th century. Founded in 1846 by brothers Jules and Auguste Devaux, it was later established and led for three generations by inspiring women. Becoming widows, the three of them contributed to the company’s climbing international success, leading the production of Champagne Devaux with character and ambition. The house remained managed by the Devaux family until 1987.
With no heirs, Jean-Pol Auguste Devaux entrusted the fate of this prestigious brand with a promising future to the Union Auboise wine group and its families of winemakers. The Devaux brand is now the undisputed reference of the Côte des Bar.
Located south of the Champagne appellation, the vineyard of the Côte des Bar is a succession of small valleys and steep hillsides interspersed with rivers over more than 70 kilometers from east to west. This configuration offers a multitude of microclimates and privileged exposures for the production of Pinot Noir, one of the region’s iconic grape varieties. The terroirs and climate of the Côte des Bar have many similarities with those of northern Burgundy: the soils are composed of marl, brown and white limestone, and clay. Pinot Noir is overwhelmingly dominant there (85%), followed by Chardonnay (13%). These are indeed the only two grape varieties used in all of Maison Devaux’s cuvées. The entire Devaux vineyard is cultivated using sustainable practices, and the majority of parcels are now in the process of converting to organic agriculture.
